Where: St Austell (23 miles from Trevella Park)

The amazing Lost Gardens of Heligan is a pioneering project to bring back the former glories of Victorian Productive Gardens, formal Pleasure Gardens and a sub-tropical Jungle that were once the pride of this mysterious Cornish estate.

The 200-acre gardens reaches their glorious peak at the end of the 19th century, but only a few years later were left to decline and grow over, with impenetrable brambles and gorse taking hold.

Yet the discovery of a tiny room that once played host to the men and women who tended the gardens with such dedication fired the imagination of a new group who made it their mission to restore the Lost Gardens and tell the stories of those who first made the gardens great.

Today, we can see how the gardens once met almost all the needs of the Tremayne family who owned the estate. The productive gardens have more than 200 varieties of fruit, vegetable, salad and herbs; the Pleasure Grounds are filled with romantic structures and unexpected features, while the luxuriant jungle foliage features exotic plantings and inspiring views, with a raised boardwalk snaking across ponds, past banana plantations and through tunnels of towering bamboo.

Poldark Mine is the only complete underground tin mine open to the public in the south west, and one of the most atmospheric ways of uncovering Cornwall’s mining past.

The mine was worked from the medieval period to the 1780s and still contains much of its original character. A mine tour investigates the early history and conditions faced by the miners, who included children as young as seven.

There’s also a ghost tour that includes the spooky story of Cornwall’s Knockers – small spirits with large hooked noses who haunted the mines.

Visitors can enjoy fascinating craft workshops which demonstrate traditional skills such as woodturning and candle making, or pan for real alluvial gold and search for precious gemstones in the gemsands.

The Cornwall coast is the resting place of more than 3,000 ships, with artefacts from 150 wrecks available to discover and explore at the Charlestown Shipwreck Centre, the largest museum of its type in Europe.

Relics on display include treasures, everyday objects, correspondence and photos from ships sunk during World Wars and from older boats that came to a bitter end along the coastline. The displays tell the stories of many fascinating encounters across hundreds of years of history.

The centre has the largest underwater diving equipment collection in the country, with various diving suits used for treasure seeking and naval purposes.

There is also viewing gallery above St Austell port and dock where there is often an assortment of boats, including square riggers which are resplendent when fully rigged. Kids can play with remote controlled boats in a mini version of the port.

What: Trerice Manor

Where: Kestle Mill, near Newquay (3 miles from Trevella Park)

Pay a visit to Trerice Manor, one of the most famous haunted homes in Cornwall.

The spooky story goes that the original 16th century owner Lord Arundell, nicknamed the ‘wicked lord’ in neighbouring villages, discarded a servant girl when he discovered he had made her pregnant. She committed suicide and returned to haunt the house, leaving behind a distinctive smell of lilac after visits.

In the 19th century the north wing of the old house was pulled down because the owners were too scared to live in it, and the remaining personal possessions of Arundell were burnt.

However it seems that didn’t halt the hauntings. During works in the 1980s builders reported doors opening by themselves and the sound of long skirts swishing along the floorboards!

Today the property is owned by the National Trust and Trerice remains little-changed from the days of its early owners.

What: St Piran’s Cross

Where: Penhale Sands (6 miles from Trevella Park)

Discover the eight-foot high St Piran’s Cross, which is hidden among the dunes of Penhale Sands and commemorates one of Cornwall’s patron saints.

The cross dates back to the sixth century and is the oldest recorded stone cross in Cornwall.

Legend has it that St Piran was cast into the stormy sea by Irish heathens with a millstone round his neck, but as soon as he hit the water the storm calmed and he floated from Ireland to Cornwall, where he founded an abbey and continued his holy life of healing.

One day St Piran is said to have built himself a fireplace from a large black hearthstone and as his first fire roared a trickle of white metal oozed from the stone in the shape of a cross – his discovery was tin and the local population capitalised to develop one of Cornwall’s most successful industries.

St Piran became the patron saint of miners and the white trickle of metal he discovered became the white cross that features against a black background on the Cornish flag.
